The BL 15pdr shrapnel shell was painted grey to distinguish it from the very similar BL 12pdr shrapnel shell which was, in common with other British shrapnel shells, painted black.
But I nolonger have manuals for the QF 15pdr and have picked up a pair of RheinMetall made 15pdrs with a small amount of what appears to be original grey paint with possibly a red, now oxidised to orange, band immediately above the drive band. See photo. Can anyone confirm for certain that the QF was also painted grey and why was there a red band just above the drive band?
many thanks, Dave
