Recent acquisitions from militaria show

Just a quick question on the 2inch Trench Mortar. The brass shipping cap is a different manufacturer than the cast body, could this have happened or have the parts been "married" at some later time? Any thoughts would be appreciated! Pat

The bomb heads, bomb stems, fuzes and transit plugs were often made by different manufacturers - or at least that's what the 2" TH bomb contracts indicate. There is a fair chance that all components of your bomb came together back in 1916, but of course there is no guarantee.

Bomb heads and bombs stems were mated together in the field. For transport the bomb heads had individual packing pieces of wood taped on to stop them rolling around, and the stems were supplied in separate wooden boxes (I don't know how many to a box).

Climbing around on a haphazard pile of ordnance, I wonder how many current storage rules are being broken in this picture........
