I would like to know the significance of red circle on this English 500lbs bomb.

I'm not sure but the red ring is RDX filled.But once again,I'm not sure.

I believe it's the "use by date"

"If the bomb is filled with American RDX/TNT having a residual acidity content between 0.035 per cent and 0.1 per cent, the red ring near the nose is barred and a red circle enclosing the expiry date is stencilled near the nose end of the bomb."

Hi,

Thank you for this information TIMG. I had never seen this type of marking.
After defusing the bomb dropped in 1944 certainly, I will photograph it this detail.
Have you a document about these markings ?
