Hi Mad,

So what are Rochling rounds?...I've seen them mentioned a few times, and I know there were various types and sizes.
I know tthey were WW2 German, and somehow special....but thats about it (and not even sure of that ;-))

Anyone know?

Rich

Hi there,

That is a nice 21 cm Rochling. At the end of the war there were only 1500 left in the depots.

I will get later on back with some information about the rochling geschosse.
Attached a cutaway of Pzgr 40 and one of my own.

Many were tested for sure in Hillersleben and i geuss also in Peenemunde

And i'd thought i had seen nearly everything these rochlins are new to me can we have a bit of history about them from anyone please .

They're lovely rounds...
They don't seem to be experimental, but do seem to be exceedingly rare

...but the question still stands,..why so long?. were they fired from tanks or AT guns?

Rich

Hi,

The rochling or penemunde pfeilgeschoss is like a APFSDS shell it was made to breakup or distroy Bunkers or forts because of the problems they had in the first WO at verdun frans.
They were in almost every caliber.

Will look if i have more info on it.

Cheers Mad.

Thanks Jeorg

Is there a literal translation to english for Rchling, or is that the name of the designer?

Is there a literal translation to the English for Rhling, or is the name of the designer?
Unfortunately, is not known, when in Germany the first attempts with untercaliber floors durchdefhrt became. Nevertheless, during the 2th world war there were 2 similar systems, namely the Rchling shell which became at the company Rchling in Vlklingen erntwickelt and the Peenemnder arrow floor, a Weiterentwichlung of the Rchling shell with the army-attempt place Peenemnde.

In this thread http://www.bocn.co.uk/vbforum/threads/94314-150-mm-V3
Sebastian posted an interesting drawing of several Röchling type projectiles. It looks that the 21cm Rö Gr 44 and 35 cm Rö Gr 44 have an impact marking system on the tip.
Does someone please have any info on the fuze of these rounds?
I know that the 34cm Rö Gr 42 was fitted with such a device and fuzed with WgrZ 38.

The 35,5 cm H. M1 with Rö. Gr. was used in combat at Sevastopol. Turret Maxim Gorkij II with tripple 30,5 cm barrel was knock-out by two shot. First they try to break it with normar Be. shells but it was too hard for it. So the Germans used the Rö. shells only in this case under the whole war. The first hit was deadly but the second can drop the whole turrret some meters far from the original posiion. Finally the whole fortress was killed by German pioneers not by Rö. shells.

Other places was only for test shooting.
Fortress Aubin-Neufchateau and Battice in Belgium;
Fortress Hurka, Hanicka, Dobrosov and Nachodsko in Czech Republic;
Gössler-Wall at Toplitzsee in Austria;
Hillersleben testplace in Germany;
And one found 34/35 cm shell in Budapest, Hungary.

Excelent info, thanks a lot!
Now only the BdZ 5141 remains mysterious.
There are still some 21cm Röchling projectiles stuck in the Czech fortification objects.
