Cutaway model of the Russian ROS-40 Parachute Flare. The Flare is/was used for Illumination of terrain and targets at night immediately.
When the cap on the bottom is removed, the ring on a rope of the friction fuze falls out. By pulling the ring outward, the friction fuze is ignited. The flame ignites a black powder charge, that activate the rocket motor. The rocket flies out of the launch tube. After 5-7 seconds and at a High of 200m the rocket motor has burned out and the small booster/delay charge in the rocket motor activates the second black powder charge pushing the flare with the parachute out of the inner tube. The flare burns for about 20 seconds and slowly falls to the ground on the parachute.
The rocket motor has 4 nozzles, a large one in the middle and three small ones for spin. The motor can handle a weight of approx. 400g
Diameter:41mm
High: 210mm
Weight 370gr
Flare burning: 20 sec.
Flare High: 150 - 200 meters
