A lot of these were "Lend Leased" to the U.S. early in ww2 for training, maybe the number was applied then,
but it's not a normal marking and I haven't seen that sort of thing up here. There might be a U.S. Ordnance bomb mark as well
if you can make it out.
I found a picture of US marked Ross bayo on eBay, which I can't copy and post. Mine is really beat up, but I thnk I can see a circular structure (like flaming bomb) and very faintly letter "S" ( like in "U.S."). So it is my belief that mine is one of thousands acquired by US from Canada for training after Canadian Military switched to using Lee-Enfield.
