Russian Mills Bomb??

Kilroy was Here

Well-Known Member
Hello, Did the Soviets ever make a copy of the British Mills Bomb during WW2? Here is some pics of one.....I think? It looks like the screw plug is bigger than a No36 on the bottom. I think probably not the original filler plug is installed.
I am going to buy this grenade either way, I like it. I would just like to know a little more history on these.

Does anyone have more information on these grenades, or if, and when they were made.

Regards, Steve

Hello Kilroy,
It looks like a No 5 or 23 with a modern striker and spring. Can you post the dimensions?
This is only a guess, I'm not a grenade expert, but we have plenty on this forum so I expect I will be corrected.

navyman.

Yes it looks like a Russian copy of the 23MkIII or 36, though I have only seen Dave Sampson's example. It's WW1 and they were fitted with a very strong gas check plate with ribs.
Look at the extended length of the bottom segment. That is what make it different from the Mills. I've always thought the Israelis copied this Russian copy rather than the original Mills 36.

Rare grenade in any condition. Buy it!

Hi John, thanks for the detailed information. Yes, just saw it on his site tonight. It is very interesting. Do you think the Russians might have used them into the WW2 years?

Hi Steve

I doubt it. I think it was just a short term thing in WW1.

John

Good find, I think the filler screw has a different thread from the normal mills..... Dave
