I've handled a lot of butterfly bombs over the years but never come across one with these "patches" on the base.
It was originally really rusty and I was in the process of sanding it and they were revealed as the rust was sanded away.
There doesn't appear to be an obvious hole from the inside that they may have been used to fill so I assume they don't go all the way through.
Does anyone have any ideas what they're for?
Dave.

Where is it in relation to the casting joint line? I'm thinking possibly a chaplet (a support for the core when casting).

looking at the rust between the parts in question and the body i would say its rusted to the body rather than part of it.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

That's a good point Tim, unlike M83 bodies where there's a massive casting seam its not at all obvious on SD2's, at least not to me, and as i've sanded it, less so. The patches are however central to the base so assuming a casting seam crossed the base either way (appreciate it doesn't on M83's) then it would cross them.

Dave, some more pics. I understand what you mean, makes sense, but, I can't even get the corner of one to l lift with a knife blade, so if it is rusted in place its top quality grade A1 rust.

LE!-13-HG. I guess that would explain why they're so well fixed in place. Surely not a mistake though? Presumably it had a purpose?

un melted iron waste that sat at the bottom of mould when pored, looks like a punched strip of metal on these shots
