shell case

This shell case was found on a recent dive, I have never come across a shell case before with the firing cap extended out from the shell case. Anyone any ideas.

Hi this was a standaed naval primer late 1800 till early ww1 the primers are far harder to come by than the cases they are often thrown away so the case will stand up easy.
