I inherited an old shell case from my father several years ago and would like some information about it. on the base it is dated 1943 and 4in mk16. It has been cut into an umbrella stand and my father obtained it in 1965 from the Malta dockyard. Any information would be helpful otherwise I might just sell it

The case is a naval one for the 4 inch Mk 16 gun generally secondary armament on earlier WWII large warships. the shell would have been crimped into the open end and it all loaded in one piece. Might be worth either searching on here or on the net against 4 inch gun or similar for more info.
