Signal AN-M57 / Signal M57

Not an expert on signals, but I have heard that the nomenclature "AN" was added after an item had been approved for both Army and Navy use. It was not always applied, for example if the item was not intended to be used by both services.
 
That's what I think too, but still does not explain why I can't find any docs about the "early version" without the "AN" mention.
