now where did you get those photos Tony?! Does 1861 artillery trials, screw shell and slotted shell (had hard wood inserts that had small angled wings cut into them to make a shell spin in a smooth bore barrel) come into the answer?!!! Dave
 
What makes you think it's a shell ? I only see a macro picture of the tip of an old rusty screw !!!!!

Just trying to hide my ignorance. I have no idea, and will certainly learn something soon !!!
