Waff,

The Fairey Swordfish is fitted with a Bristol Pegasus Engine.

It is started with a hand crank.

The Fairey Firefly has a Coffman starter which uses cartridges.

The Ton Class Minesweepers were fitted with Napier Deltics that used Coffman Starters as were De Havilland Chipmunk Aircraft.

I found a You Tube Clip showing Swordfish starting

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0eV8hQDVAY"]YouTube- Fairey Swordfish[/ame]

Look at about 1:40

I help start a Swordfish at Yeovilton years ago and it was bloody hard work.

Two of you wind up a large flywheel and the pilot then operates a clutch to use the spinning flywheel to start the aircraft.

Engine starter cartridge.

Thats very interesting item and great indeed to see something different like that. I have one of the common brass jet engine starter cases. They are one of the most common carboot finds but yours is a type ive never seen before, nice item! Regards, Tim.
