Souvenirs of the British 49th Infantry Division
Two souvenirs of Germany with the 49th Divisions polar bear has the center piece,the small trinket box I picked up in a junk shop alot of years ago and the ash tray fom ebay last month.The 49th were a follow up division to D day and earned the title "the butcher bears " from Lord Haw Haw ,German propoganda ministry, after claims they had massacred SS tank crews who where trying to surrender,high praise indeed.I
I take it these were made by some enterprising German metalworkers for sale to the Divisional troops whilst on occupation duties in 1945/6
