Cutaway model of a Stinger ball 32 caliber rubber ball grenade model 1090. This grenade is produced by The Defence Technology company.
The grenade delivers three stimuli for Psycological and physiological effects; hard rubber pellets (0.32 inch/8,1 mm dia), a bright flash and 170 Db sound. The hard rubber pellets are projected in a 50 ft radius.
Construction:
The Stinger ball 32 caliber is used for crowd control by law enforcement and corrections facilities.
The stinger ball consits of a rubber grenade body (1) with a black plastic cap (2) in top that receives the standard M201A1 grenade fuze (3). The platic cap is partially slided into the grenade body, and fixated with a round of tape over the cap and upper part of the grenade body. The M201A1 fuze has a 1,5 seconds pyrotechnic delay (4). Below the plastic cap a flanged cap (5) is placed that houses the ejection charge (6) for the cap with the fuze, a pyrotechnic 0,5 seconds delay element (7), an ignition charge (8), and the flash and sound composition (9), placed in a thin plastic container. The rest of the grenade is filled with 0,32 inch rubber balls (10).
Function:
Before throwing, the spoon is pressed against the grenade body and the split pin is removed. When trowing the grenade the spoon is pushed away by the mouse trap type firing pin that rotates into the firing cap of the fuze, igniting the 1,5 second pyrotechnical delay element of the fuze. After 1,5 seconds the flame of the fuze ignites the ejection charge -ejecting the cap with the fuze away from the grenade body-, also igniting the 0,5 seconds delay pyrotechnical fuze. After 0,5 seconds the ignition charge is activated which activates the main charge of flash and sound composition. The body of the grenade is ripped open with a loud bang and flash of light and the rubber balls are dispersed.
The reason the fuze with cap are ejected before the grenade explodes is that these are hard objects that may cause serious injuries when projected at high speed.
The grenade is classified as less lethal, which does not mean it is non lethal. At short distances it may still cause severe injuries or dead, and when weak body parts like an eye is hit it will have lasting health effects.

There are several types of Stinger balls available with different sizes of balls, with either CS or OC (Oleum Capsium/pepper spray) added, either a fuze with an extra Safety Clip (SC model) on the spoon of the fuze.
