Hey guys. I'm currently searching on what this maker mark is. The projectile says hotchkiss paris patent and this marking on it. Fuze has this stamping on it.

I checked "A gun for all nations, the 37 mm Gun & Ammunition", by Robert A. Mellichamp. You can find this marking (star and year of manufacture) on page 306. It is a licensed made 37 mm Hotchkiss, by Winchester Repeating Arms Co.

I have been searching for a copy of this book for a long time now.

Do you also happen to know why ever winchester casing I have ever come across is dated to 1891?

1891 was the year of the contract for the 37x120 size and it seems the only year they were made, lots of them
so they never ran out ! Previous to that all the 37x120 cases were Hotchkiss coiled cases.

I have a copy of the book which is available.... I warn you, it will not be cheap! PM me if you are interested.

The government placed a very big order that year which kept them supplied for years, Big for the US in those years as the budget was very small up into the Spanish American War. That round was for the 37x120 Army Hotchkiss gun. The Navy 37x94 Hotchkiss navy round can be found in many dates. They probably used more and ordered more.

This hybrid round is unusual, previous to this I have only seen the Heavy 1pr Hotchkiss PD projectile in the Hotchkiss coiled case with a Hotchkiss made fuze. The PD fuze on this is from the late 1880s Light Winchester made 1pr PD for the 37x94 loading. If this round is correct what we have is older components assembled and loaded in 1891.

Has anyone else run across this ?
