Strange thing off the beach

I found this on the beach recently.
It looks vaguely military.
Anyone got any ideas?
The diameter is aprox 46mm and the diameter of the screw thread approx 12.5mm.
All inert, just a solid bit of metal.

I belive most were made out of brass, just the tin body thats rotted away.
