First published in 1978, this tells the story of what happened in the Vercors massif in South West France before D Day and its resistance afterwards. Also the repeated but unanswered calls for help save for a couple of parachute drops of weapons and equipment. The tragedy was due in large part to conflicting political considerations between the Gaullists and Communists, including De Gaulle himself, jockeying for who would rule a liberated France. About 5,000 lightly armed Maquis were defeated by a German division. Afterwards German troops murdered about 800 civilians in reprisal for helping the Maquis. The author used information from some of those who survived. A very interesting read.
