Every household is supposed to pay around £165 per year to own any equipment capable of receiving live broadcasts. This is used to fund the BBC TV Service. However it is also required to watch live non BBC TV, and even foreign satellite broadcasts. It has also been updated in recent years to include live TV streamed over the internet.

There are often calls to scrap this license fee. It used to cover the maintenance costs of the TV transmitters, which have since been sold off to private companies.
