The longest day

Just finished watching The Longest Day on AMC (US cable). I thiknk it would be easier to tell you who is not in the movie than who is because it is so star packed. One of my favorite war movies about the D day invasion.....Dano

After returning home from my adventure to the Normandy beaches, I purchased the DVD of The Longest Day. It made me sad noting how many relevant places I DIDN'T get to see.

Note what's playing.

First off, "The Longest Day" is considered a CLASSIC movie that still ranks around the top 5 movies about WWII. One of John Wayne's best.
Secondly, the books on "we were Soldiers Once and Young" including the movie was fine but I believe the Company (?) that had to walk out was worse when they lost just about every one in an NVA ambush.

I agree V40
But the movie was one of the first to put the Nam conflict in a true light (all be it somewhat glamorized by Hollywood)
A first person account is hard to embelish when the commander himself is still around to verify what truly happened at La Drang 79 americans killed with 121 wounded after a 3 day engagement with a division size force of NVA (over 2000 were killed)
You're also right on the second battalion seventh cav's walk out from LZ X-ray to LZ-Albany on the 4th day they were approximatly 500 strong and where ambushed by and equally large force of NVA. The toll after the attack 155 americans killed and 121 wounded.
That's one of the facts that was left out in the movie (in fact they were largely left out of history) the actual battle of La Drang Valley was 4 days not the three covered by the movie
Either way it's a great book and the movie wasn't that bad either
