TM 9-1980 "Bombs for Aircraft

I ran across various periodicals back in the 1980s-1990s, from the period we are discussing, in the basements of various bookstores. One of them was "Army Ordnance", a periodical covering the early 1900s. I remembered these when I was reading this thread the other day and decided to see if they are online now. It just so happens that some of them are.

One of the sources is JSTOR, here "https://www.jstor.org/stable/45482692?seq=1", which has a series of articles on bombs and bomb fuzes from the 1920s. There may be significantly more but i have just started looking through them. Some of the information in them appears to be from the Army ordnance pamphlets.

Some examples are:
Bombs Part I (from 1924)
Bombs Part II (from 1924)
Bombs Part III (from 1924)
Bombs and Bomb Fuzes (from 1927)

They are free for download with the usual restrictions on usage. If you have not already run across them I think you would find them worth looking at.

Another source is Google Books "https://books.google.com/". Just type "Army Ordnance" in the search box and go from there. They appear to have a significant number of issues, but I have not had time to look through them yet.

By looking at NARA list, It appears that there is a Navy's Ordnance Pamphlet "OP533 Bombs for Aircraft" dated October 25, 1930.
Although it seems to be different from the Army's "TR-1370 A, B, D, G from 1930" , one must note that the date of publication is identical (October 25, 1930).
There is no OP533 listed in OP 0 'Index of ordnance publications' 1946

There is OP 878 General data on navy, AN-standard, army, and british bombs
- first revision 1943 : https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipe...eport_No._13-a(51),_USSBS_Index_Section_6.pdf

- second revision 1944 : https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipe...Report_No._1o(107),_USSBS_Index_Section_2.pdf

Cheers,

S.

It is not listed in the OP 0 from 1946, but is listed on the NARA site:

In the OP 0 from 1946, if an OP is superseded it is not mentioned except to say that such-and-such supersedes OP xxx. Possibly this is the case for OP 533. and it is old enough that it is not mentioned at all?

On the NARA site, OP 780 is listed a Bombs for Aircraft TM9-980 dated 9/23/1940, and OP 780-A is listed a Bombs for Aircraft dated 6/1/1942. The OP 780 and 780-A are not listed in OP 0 dated 1946 either.

A couple of other examples:

Ordnance Pamphlet OP 478 is listed in the Annual Report of the Public Print Printer dated 1917 (an index of all government printed materials available to the public) and in the Nara list as OP 478 5-inch Breech Mechanism, Mark VII, for Gun Mark VIII dated 11/1/1913, but not in OP 0 from 1946.

Ordnance Pamphlet OP 368 is listed in the Annual Report of the Public Print Printer dated 1917 (an index of all government printed materials available to the public) and in the Nara list as OP 368 Ammunition, Instructions for Marking and Painting: Part I dated 1929, but not in OP 0 from 1946.
