TMA-4 anti tank mine, Yugoslavia

Cutaway model of a Yugoslav TMA-4 anti-vehicle/tank mine. This mine is made entirely of hard PVC and is therefore non-magnetic. The mine consists of a round container with a lid glued on. Three holes are drilled into the lid of the mine, into which the pessure fuzes are placed. The fuzes are screwed into a plastic threaded ring cast into the explosive charge. Underneath the threade ring a booster charge (orange) is placed that ignites the main TNT charge in the mine. A hole is drilled through the mine body and the explosive charge, through which a rope loop is fitted, which can be used to carry the mine. Due to the small surface area of the fuzes, the mine is resistant to overpressure using explosives. The TMA-4 is laid by hand. The package containing the three detonators includes three steel rings that can be placed under the detonator, on top of the (rubber) sealing ring, so the mine can still be detected with a metal detector, if desired.

The three fuzes on the mine are UTMA-4’s, which are also made entirely of PVC, except for the aluminum detonator housings. The UTMA-4 consists of a fuze body with a friction-sensitive mixture (red) inside, mounted in a cup in top of the fuze body. On top of this, a mushroom-shaped pressure piston with a pin on the inside rests on the cup. When a pressure of between 100 and 200 kg is applied to the pressure piece, the pin breaks through the cup and ignites it by friction. The flame from this is guided downward through a channel into the heat-sensitive part of the detonator (white), which ignites the booster charge and the main charge in the mine.

Diameter : 284 mm
Height mine body : 65 mm
Height mine with fuze : 103 mmWeight complete mine : 6 kg
Weight TNT charge : 5,5 kg

The TMA-4 is found in the following countries : Angola, Chad, Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo, Lebanon, Namibia and Sudan.

The TMA-4 is the Succesor of the TMA-3, which is generally the same in shape and build up. The TMA-3 consists of a cast disc of TNT, covered with a layer of fabric reinforced resign. In contrast to the TMA-4, the TMA-3 has a fuze well in the center of the bottom, to allow the mine to be booby trapped. With the TMA-4, the rope carrying handle can be used to attach booby trap fuzes.
