Top Gun (1986)

This movie is about US Naval aviation https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092099/. It is full of military bravado about which I know nothing (never served anywhere). I like those old planes like F-14, they had panache, character. In the movie US commander tells pilots that MIGs carry Exocet missiles. Any truth to that? I know that US Navy still uses F-5 Tiger, it is funny that it's outlived F-14 Tomcat.
Just for the record:
The real life Top Gun school is at NAS Fallon, NV (my daughter is stationed there now). It is far away from water and those crash scenes when pilots land in the ocean would be difficult to film.
The movie life Top Gun school is at MCAS Miramar, San Diego. It belongs to the Corps but Navy planes use it too.

At the time of the film and until 1996 the school was at NAS Miramar. In '96 the school merged and relocated to NAS Fallon. At lot of the aerial scenes of the film were filmed in the environs of NAS Fallon.

Thanks. I think Miramar is MCAS though https://www.miramar.marines.mil/
OK, I looked up Miramar's history. It used to be NAS Miramar. That would explain my wife remembering landing at Miramar in late 1970's. She was in a P3 Orion squadron.
