Nice finds :tinysmile_fatgrin_t

First one looks to me like a Stielhandgranate M1917 the second looks to be a post WW1 Stielhandgranate 24.

just my 2 cents....

Thanks MissingSomething !

I was the same thinking about that but now i am 100 % sure !!

Thank you

Regards David

your sticks

Hi Dave, The first one is an m1915 German stick, the second an m1917 stick. The head on the m1915 stick is one of the several variants on that model (the early m1915 had a ball finial on the stick) and the m1917 are more uniform because they were made to more stringent protocol than their 1915 predecessor. Both are wartime models. NICE stuff friend. Dano

WW1 Stick grenades

Dave,Any WW1 or WW2 German stick grenade can be considered a good one.My M'15 stick has the same head as yours, but has the stick handle with the ball finial. They are getting harder and harder to get and you are lucky to have them. Wasn't all that long ago on ebay where you could get a fine example for 100.00US, but not anymore. Great addition to your collection my friend..Dano

Thanks Dano

Yes you are right i heard the handle with this star cap was created because of the mud in the trenches that the soldier had better grip with der dirty and wet hands and your stick grenade with this round back stick was after some time to dangerous because the string with the perl was hangind outside and during robbing some grenades get unlocked and kill the own soldier !
Any suggestion oft the my friend i leran also every day ??

Regards David

Hey Dano, you got me curious..... I was wondering how you identified the first one as a 1915 model?

I thought that the earlier one was ID'd by the type of handle/fuzing setup? Doesn't the '15's have a lever type afair or a cloth pull tab?

As for the second one... I was under the impression that the post WW1 ones were made "can" like with no ridges on the top and bottom. As well, I was under the impression that all the '17's also had a "belt" holder on them?

Just trying to learn here :tinysmile_fatgrin_t

David, are pictures 2 and 3 of the same grenade?

m designation stick grenades

The German WW1 stick grenade with the larger can would be a m1915, this includes the ball finial, the stick with a cardboard end cover and the star wheel screw off cap with porcelain pull. Even the ones with percussion spoon are m1915. The m1917's all have the smaller universal sized head, star cap and belt hook on the head. The m1924 and after have no belt hook. The best reference for this in my opinion would be GERMAN GRENADES OF THE GREAT WAR by Patrice Delhomme, it's kind of dated but is illustrated very well and is still available quite cheaply. The m1915 stick grenades were made with several different style large cans, while all the m1917 cans were I universal size. I wish I had a scanner then I could show you real simply. Hope this helps...Dano

yes dano realy cool !

We have seen now the M1915 and the M1917 there are more with pics are available ??

Thanks for the interest Dave, But I just have the 1915 with ball finial stick and the m1917 stick like yours, i'm sure there are other members in here that can help with some pics of the variants. In the mean time i'lll go on a web search and see what I can dig up. Dano

stickums

Missing something, definately an m1915 (the '17's have the smaller head) Pictured below is my m1915 with ball finial (same head as your'15) and the 16's will have oddball heads but all small like '17. Yes it is confusing. Next to my '15 with ball finial is Blank unused unfinished ORIGINAL stick, then the m1915 stick with percussion spoon, then a '17 can on left to compare to size on '15 cans. Help JEEEEnsy I thinks i'm getting lost here but this is best I can do on short notice. Dano

me server has gone tits up :( re-building it now ,,,i'll take some piccs tommorow ,,,it will be quicker :) hang on in there Dano....need more J.D ...lots more ..hic....

I gotta go to the can man

Exactly missing something, and if there is a belt hook it puts it in WW1, whereas the m24 has no belt hook, also remember thar the 16 stick heads are the app size of the 17 heads but come oddball, not 1 only uniform can such as the 17. The last page in Delhomme book before they show the egg grenades shows 2 16's then a 17 on far right. All 17 cans are the SAME. Hope this helps a bit more. It would really help if Delhomme numbered his pages and was a bit more organised, No offense meant to Patrice Delhomme. Dano
