Type 97 20mm[/h]
Enclosed are pictures of a Type97 20mm. Their are a lot of Jap 20mm variations and this is one of the harder ones to locate. Plus some info off the web. Measurements are base 28.4mm, shell length 124.7mm.
With typical W.W.II confusion the Japanese produced a series of 20mm cartridges for use in the
following weapons. And side by side comparison with the larger Type 98 which are easier to find.
Japanese Army:
Type 94 Aircraft cannon
Type 94 Anti-Aircraft cannon
Type 97 Anti-Tank Gun
Type 98 Cannon (Anti-Tank gun employed as AA)
HO-1 Aircraft Gun (Fixed)
HO-3 Aircraft Gun (Flexible)
HO-5 Aircraft cannon
Japanese Navy:
KEI Type 20mm MK I
Type 99 20MM MK II

The Type 97 was used in three Army weapons. The Type 99 Atk gun, the HO-1 flexible A/C gun and the
fixed A/C HO-3. The cartridge was usually made from brass and weighed 129.9 gms. It is of the rimless
type and was filled with 35.8 gms of tubular NC propellant.

Nice.
Interesting regional variations, this is the most common(ie.least rare!) Japanese 20mm in this part of the world.

The rarest in the UK would be the 20x89RB Type 94 and the big 20x158 Type 94 (I've never seen either, except in Ken Elks' book - essential for anyone interested in Japanese ammo of up to 40mm). The Army Type 97 (20x125), Type 98 (20x142) and Ho-5 (20x94) are not too hard to find, but the naval Oerlikons (Types 99-1 20x72RB, and especially Type 99-2 20x101RB) are very rare.

yeh, I've got a handful of the Type97 and Type98, and 1 case only for the 99-1.
The 25mm in comparison are relatively common.
