Cutaway model of a Russian UMP fuze, placed in a TM62P mine. As the thread of the fuze fits the -smaller- TM46 and TM-57 mine series fuze wells a bakelite adepter ring is used to make the UMP fuze suitable for the TM-62 series of mines.
The TM-62P is a low metal Bakelite resign anti tank mine. It weighs 9,5 kgs of which 7.5 kg is the explosive charge (TNT, RDX/TNT/Aluminium, or Amatol). It has a diameter of 340 mm and is 85 mm high without fuze, when fuzed with the UMP fuze it is 127mm high.
The mine body contains no metal parts. A fabric sling is placed on the top plate for carrying purposes. The mine body has no secondary fuze wells.
The UMP fuze is an electrically fired, pressure activated fuze that can be switched on an off from a distant switchboard. The mine is connected to the switchboard by means of an electric cable, that either fills or drains the six capacitators in the fuze body. This allows the passing of friendly troops to pass a minefield safely when switched off, to be activated when enemy troops want to pass the minefield.
The UMP consists of a steel fuze body (1), housing the six capacitators (2) in top, below that the electrically ignited squib (3) just above the detonator (4) in the booster charge (5). A bakelite pressure plate housing (6) is screwed over the top of the steel fuze housing and contains the electric connector wire plug (7), the contact ring (8), the steel pressure plate (9) with the six pressure springs (10) which fit six holes in the bakelite housing, the bakelite insulation plate (11), the rubber seal disc (12) (weather tightning), and the steel mesh (13). These last three parts (11,12,13) are locked in place by a steel ring (14) around the bakelite pressure plate housing.
When the mine is activated from the switchboard, the capacitators are loaded. When a pressure of more than 120 kg is applied to the pressure plate (9) the pressure plate is pushed downward until it makes contact with the contact ring (8), closing the electric circuit, allowing the capacitators (2) to drain over the squib (3) which ignites into a flame which ignites the detonator (4). This will ignite the booster charge (5), which ignites the mine.
Diameter UMP fuze : 138 mm
Height UMP fuze : 80 mm
