Unknow british ww2 box 1943

Hi Radek,
If the grey colour is original then the box will have contained some type of chemical ammunition. The box will have numbers and letters stamped into the metal. Can you tell us what numbers and letters you can see please? Also the photograph of the label is a bit blurred - can you tell us what is printed and written on the label please?

It looks like a C235, 3.7" AA box to me. Can you see the code imprinted on the inside of the lid?

I am sorry for the pictures. I have took they with my mobile. I will try make any better tomorow.

I also have these boxes listed as holding 5.5inch gun propelling charges and Charges Demolition No.14

They are still in use today for a Demolition Charge, They have been modified with internal fittings, but they are all 40s dated boxes.

On the lid is stamped GMH-W C 235 I 1943 and here are anothers pictures with stencils (possibly reused)

The NATO stock number (NSN) 1005-99-961-8393 indicates that whatever was in the box was a weapon rather than ammunition. The first 4, 1005, indicates "Guns, up to 30mm"

Interesting to note that this is an Australian box with the manufacturer being GMH-W for General Motors Holdens Ltd, an Australian car manufacturer who made field guns and ammo boxes etc for the war effort.
Almost certainly it would have started life as a 3.7" HAA box holding 2 rounds.

Cheers,

Graeme
