Tube For Shell
It may well the tube for a 105mm artillery shell from a field gun, the current ones are very similar, however country of origin, not sure from the writing i think your guess of british is a good possiblity

What is printed on the middle, I cant make it out. Is there anything stamped into the metal end plate on the lid or the bottom?
