Unknown 140mm shell

Hello forum!

I found this shell on a California beach not long ago and have been unsuccessful trying to identify it. It has no markings on the base or what is left of the body. It is brass, has a 140mm (5.5") diameter at the base and is mostly rimless except for a slight bulge at the base. I'm guessing it is fairly old...maybe pre-WW1. Anyone have an idea what it might be?

Thanks in advance!

Primer indeed looks US made. Based on the 140 mm I would say a US 3 inch No 2 Navy, a 76.2x680R138.1 case. I took this from a listing.
