Saw this 4.7 inch Solid Shot (?) projectile at a friends house. The item was found at a scrap yard and the driving band removed. Would this have been the original colour? Or would it have been black?
I strongly suspect that this was an Ex South African Navy shell and therefore Ex - British navy.
4.7in naval solid practice of 1940 are apx 370mm long but the driving band is nearer the base than yours at 13mm and the band is 35mm apx wide. The photo appears to show a hole below the driving band?
Yes. There is a hole close to the base. What is the significance of this? The 4.7 inch was only used on two South African ships. From 1951 untill 1961. So was not used much at all.
