unknown caltrop/boobytrap

I got this from my uncle who designed the die to stamp the metal spikes during the 1960s for the Vietnam war.(he lived in the USA)
dia 83mm,spikes 35mm high,round body material is some sort of wood composite.
ive never seen another one even like it,maybe an experimental or CIA type thing?

Good guess. In Kieth Melton's 1993 book "CIA Special Weapons and Equipment", it is listed as the Sand Spike. It's a tire puncturing device designed to work better in sand than a conventional tire spike or caltrop. He says the official name is Destruction Device, Automotive, Sand Spike.

I assume it is pretty scarce as I've never seen another in the flesh, either.
 
thanks for that,i didn't have that book,although I have quite a few other books on that type of thing
