Unknown case headstamped M.A.R 1932

I have permission to post this query from an Australian up-coming auction.
I ask to identify the case and use. It has been vandalised (Trench Art.Yuk). Is the milled rim real or made thinner and knurled ?
It does remind me of the cut-down 3Pr cases for depth charges and mortar launch but I have no dimensions.
It appears beside a Canberra bomber electric engine starter so approx. 47mm mouth??
What is. M.A.R and the strange stamps at 6 o'clock? All ideas are welcome.

In my listing of American manufacturers, I found for MAR : Marathon Letourneaux Inc.

MAB = Manufacture d’armes de Bayonne, France.

The head stamp is not typical, at all, for French made shell cases. Also the primer is deviating, it reminds of a flare-type case.
