This is on loan to me from the Army. It was recovered from the wall of a house in DC last year. Originally it was beleived to be the George Keeling Hand Grenade, Patent # 2,299,904.

There is an entry for the item on Darryl's site in the "What is it" section:

Francesco has come up with a good identification on this, it appears to be a George Keeling patent grenade, patent number 2299904.

I pulled the patent info and the Keeling grenade does not have a pull pin or the metal chain going through the body. Below are the pictures of the one that I have along with the referenced patent.

Any ideas?

No idea. My guess is the grenade is probably from the late 30's to mid 40's.

Ciao, the 1th identification was mine. I think that G.Keeling has not made a patent just, but a lot of its modifications.

Ciao Francesco. Maybe you're right, but in this case what's the meaning of a chain and tap traversing the grenade's body?

Maybe a tool to unscrew the vise? More, if the mobile part (num 8 in the patent) is blocked by the pin, ther is no a valid reason to put the chain in the middle of the body (acting as a aditional safe system)
