Unknown rocket

I saw this particular kind of ordnance during an exhibition on WWII, in which are gathered relics, uniforms and some weapons, in a small town near Arezzo called Montevarchi.

It is probably a rocket but I've never seen a rocket of this kind before, even aerial or shoulder launched. The object is 25-30 cm long (9,8-11,8 inches), probably 20-25 mm caliber (0,8-1 inches) and it is in bad conditions.
One of the organizer of the exhibition told me that the ordnance has been found sticked inside a tree by a peasant and the deep cut on the side is the trace left by the peasant's chainsaw. The peasant was a child during the war and he remembers that, in that zone (Castelfranco di Sopra) during the passagge of the frontline in the summer 1944, many aerial raids took place.
The tagline under the object doesn't clarify anything on the object and only reports the story of the peasant, as follows: "Unguided air-ground rocket. Part of a swarm launched by Allied aircraft on Castelfranco di Sopra during the passage of the frontline and found inside a tree in the same zone".

I submit this to your knowledge and experience. Thanks everybody in advance!

Let me first thing to a simply "flechette" of an antipersonnal cluster ! Not sure it is a rocket.

Yoda

Thanks for replying Yoda. It was the second thing that I thought, but isn't it too big to be an anti-personnal flechette? Usually anti-personnal flechette measures only few centimeters...

I really wish to thank you Yoda. I can't even imagine that were used flechettes of that dimensions!
The next step will be trying to understand what kind of antipersonnal cluster munitions were used in WWII by the RAF, just for being accurate!
