We recently found a few fragments from a large unknown (probably British) shell here in the Netherlands. Two large fragments with remnants of the driving-band were uncovered, as well as a piece of threaded shrapnel and a small section of the driving band. These pieces were all found in the same crater. For our research regarding the last months of WWII in our region, it is important to know what types of ordnance where used here. It is known that the 3rd Super Heavy Regiment (British) saw limited action here for a few days, with 8 inch and 240mm guns. Other than that American 240mm guns also engaged enemy concentrations in our region prior to Operation Grenade. Does anyone of you recognize these pieces? It would help me a lot.
The driving band is approximately 8,5cm (approx. 3,35") in with. The thickness of the body is approximately 2,5cm (1").
