Unkown Item In British Military collection

Anybody any ideas what this item is? It is approx 90mm 3.6 inches in diameter. Hollow an inert. Has a steel plug which is inserted in to the base.

Currently residing in an official instructional collection.

Any help much appreciated!

Guys, thanks for the posts. Kev the item in the post you kindly added is the top part of a 3" Mortar Smoke Round.

Does anybody have a picture/diagram of the 9cm Lanz/Mauser Mortar round?
