this is an unusual case, perhaps someone can give me an idea what it is.

Its 3.45 inch in diameter at the top and a little under 4.5 inches at the bottom. It has a cut out in the rim which looks to be original. The case is a 2 part construction although that is difficult to see as it is very polished but the bottom inch appears to be copper (or brass with a higher copper content than the rest). But the underside has strange ribs but again appears to be original to the case. There are no markings of any sort. Any ideas?

thanks, Dave

For the 3.45" P1 Shoulder Gun. I will copy the ref. Part of the Broadway Trust Company developments (Sir Dennis Burney).

many thanks Norman, I am guessing that this is an early 'Burney gun' case.

Does anyone have a photo of the projectile or better still one for sale?!

Yes Dave but one of his developments (he worked on 20mm through to 8-inch recoiless weapons) produced a 3.45-inch RCL Gun on a carriage; the case is of the 'perforated' variety and close to parallel sided. Projectiles for this version may not be appropriate for your Shoulder Gun case.
