US 3 inch Proof Projectile

Subject is a US 1944 3 inch M62 projectile. Is it unusual to find a proof projectile with an attached AP Cap and not blunt? In all respects it looks like the service version (minus the windshield) - are there any other charateristics that make it a proof? Thanks for any help.

Ther first question that comes to my mind is the style of the font. It is quite a stylised font and doesn't look appropriate for the age of the projectile. I'm not saying it isn't, it's just curious and different to the fonts I've seen.

As for your question, all the proofs I've seen have either been plain AP or flat nose, and non with a ballistic shield as this is normally to increase long distance performance.

I'm sure some of your US colleagues will provide a lot more information

Rich thanks for the reply. Maybe an old service projectile re-designated at a later date? I'm debating adding the shield and making it look like a regular projectile, but am afraid of reducing its collector appeal..............?

My theory is that it was converted to a proof in limited numbers, so they lettered it with a stencil instead of making the roll-on lettering stamp they use for high production.

Hazord - anything lost by converting to a service projectile (painting it green and adding the wind shield)?

The original history of the round. The proof is more difficult to find than an AP. You are taking something special and making it common, plus changing it from what it is to what you would like it to be.

Jeff said it all. You will never see another proof one, but the service ones will turn up.

Please allow me to provide the opposing view. When looking at market value, there are very, very few who want a proof round. It is not sexy. It will have a higher resale value if you make it into an AP round.

Thanks for the feedback. I'd just like to make a decent display out of an M26 casing - seems like if you're a long time collector you cherish what is different, versus a newbie (like me) who wants a good representation of a service round.
In 2-3 years of looking I have not seen a regular M62 for sale (I may be looking in the wrong places). Thus, if someone would like to trade their spare service M62 for this proof, I'd do a straight swap.

FWIW - I'd also keep as a proof, it's in fantastic condition, and another service round will appear...
if you do complete a straight swap, make sure you get a projectile of the same or better quality, (certainly not lesser) and preferably a case too. btw the cases are a lot easier to find so that shouldn't be a problem.
