Hi Christopher

This is a german box (WW II)looks like a werkzeugkiste, maybe for waffengerat or something like that.
i think this one is later used by the americans

I think the lock has been replaced, the german,s used a different kinda lock.

The handles on both sides of this box are typical german.
 
The US used handles like these also, this is some type of US engineer's kit storage box. The construction is typical of reusable storage boxes. It probably held some type of tool kit.

Hi, I'am think Willys is on the right track. It looks like a case for some engineer tool set. We had some like these when I was in the first time around.
