US Cleaning kit? box

Someone I know has this steel box marked "US" on the lid. The size is 5" x 9" x 2". They believe it may be for a machine gun cleaning kit. Is this correct or does it have some other use?

I think that this is one of a two part set designed as toys for children wishing to make a career in the banking industry......it is of course a cash box. The other missing one is much, much smaller and has impressed on the lid ------ THEM !!!!!!

Sorry, just couldnt resist.....I have no idea what it is, but looks interesting!!

That box sure is similar, and the seller also gived the same measurements as the one I show. I will tell the owner of the box that it is a cleaning kit box.
 
Hello. The box is the 1912 Squad Cleaning Kit box for the 1911 Colt. There is one for sale at Ebay under "autordco" auctions and there is a picture of what the full box looks like.

The example shown above is a late WW II made type, the first type was a blued steel box with a wooden insert instead of the steel as shown. In the US the kits can be assembled for parts found at gun shows pretty easily, but the costs add up. The oil can is usually the most expensive ($15-40) but buying 10 cleaning rods and 10 screwdrivers add up. The early kits had brass cleaning rods and later kits had steel. There are reproductions of the brass rods being made as originals are hard to find. It is a neat accessory to have for the M1911 and M1911A1 pistols.
