I just picked up a nice M48 with a 1940 date. It has been plated. Could this have been the original factory finish before painting? Came with an M57 PD fuze dated 1945.
Not very likely. The extra time and cost at this critical time would not be allowed,Also, chrome had more important uses. Most likely chromed after the war or during so for some general's office. The need for chrome surface on an item which would have a short life in it's future.
Definitely not a presentation grade or shiny type plating like chrome or nickel. It is probably Cadmium plated. Would they have done that in 1940 before the war?
