(CNN) – The bow of a US Navy cruiser damaged in a World War II battle in the Pacific has shone new light on one of the most remarkable stories in the service’s history.

Four of the New Orleans class fought at the Battle of Guadalcanal.

3 were sunk, Astoria, Quincy and Vincennes.

New Orleans lost it's bow and did not sink.

Quincy and Astoria also lost their bows. In the case of Astoria the bow is lying on top of the rest of the wreck on the seabed at about 850m
