What colour for shell?

Hi all,

I recently acquired a shrapnel shell of about 76mm calibre. It was in a WW1 German case, and the fuze had Arabic numbers on the timing ring. I was told that the Germans made this ammunition for the Turks during the first World War.

Can somebody please tell me what colour the body should be painted, and what stencils (if any) should be on it?

At present it is painted in a thick, somewhat chipped, coat of semi-gloss black.

No pictures!

Sorry, no photos, but if it helps I can say that the case is 76x278mm; the rim diameter is 90mm, and the headstamp is PATRONENFABRIK o KARLSRUHE o 1913 21 (the "o" represents the "flaming bomb" symbol).

The shell measures 75mm across the base, on which the only visible mark is a small circle over a triangle that has 2 short strokes emerging from the base (looks a bit like the symbol for a "Ladies" convenience!!). Shell measures 213mm to the steel adapter ring for the fuze to screw into, and just under 270mm overall. In addition to the Arabic numbers on the time ring, there is a set of Arabic marks either side of the brass nose cone.

Definately German 77mm shell for use by Turkey, have seen them but not all that common. Germany supplied the Turks with much equipment and ordnance during WW1...Dano
