so is this for the 7.92 Mauser? Would it originally be clean and shiny or be a dull colour? also would it have any painted markings e.g red in the grooves like on the british ones
Yes, always referred to 7.92mm 'Mauser' although the 7.92x57 round was not designed Mauser.
These drill rounds,Ex Patrone S* can be found in 'shiny' brass or in blackened form,but no paint in the grooves ect.
They were also used during WW2,but I'm sure the later ones had a slightly more pointed 'bullet' profile.
