What is this Drill Round?

Picked it up last year, looks 7.62, seems to be a relic, it is all one piece of metal

Looks like a normal 7.92x57mm German exercise round from WWI. Is any of the headstamp legible?

However, that style of drill round was made by DWM for example in several military calibres. Measurements would also assist identification.

There are no visible markings on it, i will clean up the bottom today to see if there are any marks.

Measure the length of the "case" part. If it is 57mm long then it is a 7.92mm, or if it is 53mm long it is a 7.65mm. What it is not is a 7.62 x51mm.

so is this for the 7.92 Mauser? Would it originally be clean and shiny or be a dull colour? also would it have any painted markings e.g red in the grooves like on the british ones
 
Yes, always referred to 7.92mm 'Mauser' although the 7.92x57 round was not designed Mauser.
These drill rounds,Ex Patrone S* can be found in 'shiny' brass or in blackened form,but no paint in the grooves ect.
They were also used during WW2,but I'm sure the later ones had a slightly more pointed 'bullet' profile.
