what is this retarder assembly from

looks more like a submunition experimental round to me. Only 12" tall, hard to tell dia but maybe only 3". reminds me of experimental bomblets during the Rockeye bomblet development
 
It could also be from the air dropped ground sensors as used in Vietnam or the 81mm mortar ground sensor round, but the fins for that one are only about 3 inches long.

The little clips at the top of the slots are just like the ones on the air dropped sensors.

I guess I'll have to keep an eye out for the penetrator end of it now.
I already have an antenna for it.
Then it'll need a nice camo paint job. Just passed on the piece I need a couple months ago.
I hate when that happens.

There are at least 2 and maybe 3 different lengths for the penetrator part. I think US-Subs told me there are three. I have it in two lengths.

When I bid on the Retarded I thought it was for a bomb. I'm happy its for an ADSID. I already have one that is a one piece unit. Looks a side collection now.

right it is very close to the photos I have of a number of experimental air dropped sensors, I'll add these pics to my digital library (300 gig and growing)

During the Vietnam War, the U.S was constantly trying to figure out where the enemy was, underneath all of the jungle canopy. The sensors as shown in the photo by Jolly Green were hand thrown out of helicopters and were designed to detect vibrations in the ground from the movements of the VC/NVA. They would transmit signals back to receivers where the troops would monitor them and call air strikes or artillery onto the positions. There has been some discussion on BOCN about it as it related to IGLOO WHITE. You might do a search on it. US-Subs tells me that the air-dropped sensors were sometimes boobytrapped to prevent enemy tampering. The retarders were designed to keep the sensor from burying itself too deep in the ground. There were 81mm mortar delivered sensors and 155mm howitzer delivered sensors. U.S.-Subs posted a photo of his 81mm sensor in an earlier post. I'm reattaching a copy.
