What's this secret weapon?

I have some notes about a secret weapon tested by the Marine Aircaft Experimental Establishment during WW11. It states 'We were asked to try out this shotgun weapon that fired a large number of 25 lb bombs designed to detonate on impact with a submarine. You potentially had 20 chances of hitting a sub.' Apparently tests were carried out using a land based aircraft of American manufacture. Does anyone know anything more about this 'shotgun weapon' and its official name?

yes, it could be Hedgehog as MAEE also conducted MAD trials. Maybe the trials operatives at the time did not have, or know a name for it. He says in a report that an aircraft was lost during the trials but I cannot match such an accident with MAEE 'flying accidents'. Thank you for the feedback.
