What's with all the "Mks" of US Navy WW2 Bofors cartridge cases?

It seems Navy 40mm Bofors cartridge cases are the most common WW2 dated case you run across here in the US. I believe I have seen war dated cases marked as "MKI" thru maybe about "MK5 or MK6"???
I know almost nothing about Navy ammo - can someone enlighten me as to what the different WW2 bofors case MKs are and how they differ from each other?
