Dont know why the hole but Bonnex's section drawing shows the anti twist pins 6 of them .3something inch in dia and their position (the whole head of the shell comes off to release the balls not just the adaptor as in 18pr etc) to prevent it moving before the expelling charge fires the 6 screws hold it on and the anti rotation pins stop it twisting during firing these are in slots in the top section so do not restrict the head going forward. I'd have a very close look at where the joint would be all round the shell with a magnifying glass and different lighting angles and see whats there. It may be the hole is a mising pin. If it is sorry Dano dont know why its radiused unless someones used it to feed a cable through to make a table lamp as it would be easier than drilling the body. 2pr
