WW2 6Pr APBC Rounds

I got these two rounds today [heads only shown] & my question is , why has one got a shorter cap than the other ? Thanks . Siegfreid.

Mike,

The shorter one appears to be an APC (Armour Piercing, Capped) and the longer is an APCBC (Armour Piercing, Capped, Ballistic Capped). The APC has a mild steel cap to stop the AP point being broken off on impact, and the APCBC has a thin sheet steel aerodynamic cone added to the APC body to reduce drag and thereby increase range/performance. The cone just disintegrates on impact and has no penetrative effect.

Ozzi . I can't see anything stamped into the body but it does have 80 stamped on the band . Thanks. Mike.
