the device is a real one, but I can't believe the story with the Royal Family.
'Peter's Schokoladenriegel' is mentioned in the US-manual FM 5-31 boobytraps; unfortunately without any further details (and the same pic).
charge and ignition were integrated in the canvas (how? nobody knows). metal parts/shrapnel are unlikely due to the weight.
